Is this the year the Revs finally win it all?
This year’s New England Revolution set a league record for points in a season, but can they come through in the Playoffs?
The New England Revolution are historically the Buffalo Bills of Major League Soccer. Having made the MLS Cup Final five times in the league’s 25 year existence, the Revs have yet to win the league title.
They’ve come tantalizingly close several times, losing in extra time three times and in penalties in 2006. But this year’s squad, and its league record 73 points represent perhaps the best chance the team has to take home the championship.
Behind newly-named MLS coach of the year Bruce Arena, and goalkeeper of the year and US Men’s National Team keeper Matt Turner, the Revs are set to begin their playoff journey tonight at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, MA in the conference semifinals against New York City FC.
I haven’t always been a Revs fan, but I’ve followed the team fairly closely for the last 15 years. Over that time my life has changed immensely. I had kids, then my marriage and gender fell apart and I moved out of New England for the first time in my life.
But the Revs were always there for me, with lots of memories along the way. The first time I ever kissed a man after transitioning came under fourth of July fireworks at Gillette after a Revs game. Countless games with good friends and people I’ve long since lost touch with, and an online group of people who love the team even more than I do.
I was heartbroken in 2014, the last time the Revs lost in the league final (to the LA Galaxy, who was led by current Revs coach Bruce Arena). I hope this is the year the Revs finally bring it home.
